AI is infiltrating healthcare — what should doctors do about it? Embrace it, according to Mark Cuban, the multi-hyphenate mogul who cofounded the online pharmacy Cost Plus Drugs in 2022. Mark discussed AI agents (among many other topics) with Offcall cofounder Dr. Graham Walker on a recent episode of the How I Doctor podcast:
There are these things called agents. If you’re planning to have your own practice, you need to understand this stuff. Before email, doctors didn't take emails. Before texts, they didn’t take texts. Before apps, they didn’t use apps. Now that’s going to happen with agentic AI.”
Doctors shouldn’t think about AI in terms of what it can do better than them, but rather what it can do for them. Doctors can use AI agents, Mark says, to enhance their services — to accommodate patients’ needs more efficiently, and increase patients’ confidence in their care. Mark offers a hypothetical to illustrate his point:
"Miss Doe, I appreciate that you’re going on ChatGPT for your hemorrhoids, but let me just tell you something. Follow these instructions, and every time you look something up, it'll automatically send it to me. And since this is my practice, I'm charging you $1 every time it gets sent to me. But I'll respond, or my model that I've built learning from all these questions will respond.”
